ESCARUS General Manager Kubilay Kavak, PhD, spoke at a panel titled “How Do We Manage Our Energy?” at the Power Generating Factories Summit and Exhibition held at the Wow Convention Center on October 22.
In his speech, Escarus General Manager Kubilay Kavak, PhD, stated that the top management should be fully convinced and mobilize the resources needed accordingly for the establishment of an energy management system in a factory, plant or company, adding that this was a prerequisite for ISO 50001, as in all management systems. Kavak, PhD, went on to say that: “Everything flows like water if the top management internalizes the issue. On the other hand, when the Energy Management System is considered only as an advertisement tool or reduced to a just document that has to be taken due to the popularity of ISO 50001, it will be difficult to construct a permanent, successful and effective system. Therefore, it is important that particularly the top management know that, just as they know that the most expensive form of energy is the energy that cannot be supplied when needed, the cheapest form of energy is the one that has never been produced and therefore not consumed, namely, reduced energy consumption through energy savings.”
Indicating that the prerequisite for the top management’s commitment is a written energy policy, Kavak, PhD, also noted the importance of designating an executive representative. Saying that naming a person to perform this task would send a clear message to everyone as the top management won’t have time to actively manage the process, Kavak, PhD, emphasized that every department, from human resources to the purchasing units, should get involved in the process. Stressing the need for an energy team in the ensuing stage, Kavak, PhD, said: “Creating the energy management teams from among the representatives of different departments would make a great difference as this choice is important in terms of the coordination/ownership of different departments. On the other hand, team composition could vary by firm size, organization/culture and the energy-intensiveness of firm’s respective industry.”
